Our Head of Corp & Pub Affairs @adamskipowell shares his OPR Big Day Out experience
One night earlier this month, inspired by Biz’s brilliant Big Day Out experience, I spent a night at the Natural History Museum’s #Dinosnores for Grown-Ups event. For 12 hours I had free rein of the museum’s exhibits and displays, before sleeping in the Great Hall under a diplodocus and statue of Charles Darwin. Aside from being a super-cool museum, getting to take selfies with a mammoth and playing hide and seek in the dinosaur skeletons, I learned a lot which has relevance to OPR.
At a talk by paleo-artist Luis Rey we were challenged to draw dinosaurs based on their skeletons – Luis’s key advice being to challenge our preconceptions from Godzilla or Jurassic Park. The latest ideas reckon T-rex had feathers (like a massive chicken on steroids) and who knows what colour it may have been, but its unlikely to have been green or brown like in comics books.
It’s a good insight into how we fall into mental ruts of sketching out what we think we know rather than thinking about the evidence – in this case the latest dinosaur archaeology coming out of China which Luis is paid to imagine. Check out some of his ideas at www.luisrey.ndtilda.co.uk – here’s a taster:
Here’s my effort, with an amused Luis.

Then, at a talk by the brilliant Erica McAlister (@flygirlnhm) on the Sex Life of Insects I learned that the small does not mean boring – the things male wood lice do to get laid is terrifying for the female while crabs (the human body type) are an endangered species these days because of the trend for body-grooming and ‘deforestation’. Phillips’ body-grooming range has a lot to answer for!
What the talk showed was that the everyday stuff under our noses can be fascinating if the way you have the right story-teller to bring it to life.
Finally, if this is not enough, you fall sleep in the Great Hall lulled to sleep by a harpist in a dinosaur onesie playing sci-fi move soundtracks. Thanks Big Day Out Fund!
