As I come to the end of my placement amongst the action at Ogilvy PR London, I’ve been asked for my take on life in the agency. It seems cliché, but every day has been so different and dynamic it verges on impossible to sum it all up, but I’ll give it my best shot. Before I arrived, I’d heard that PR start their day earlier (usually ending later) than the rest of Ogilvy, have semi-aggressive attitudes to hot-desking, and work in a room that reaches tropical temperatures most afternoons.
I was understandably very nervous.
Nonetheless, as soon my laptop hit the table on the first day I was inundated with people who wanted to make sure I was settling in OK, that I wasn’t struggling too much with the most basic of Excel spreadsheets and that the office fan was pointing in my direction. This underlined the collaborative spirit that permeates everything OPR does- everyone takes pride in what they do and who they work with.
I now leave OPR not only knowing the difference between Ovidrel and Ovitrelle, where liquid crystals come from and how deep the Suez Canal is, but also with the belief that no matter your age, experience or rank, your opinion is not only valued but actively sought.
The days may be long, and the work potentially overwhelming, but the confidence and buzz from seeing the work come to fruition is huge. The trials of hot-desking may cause angst when coming into work, but the variety of people you sit with, chat to, and get advice from is incredible. And it may get far too hot, but hey, we’re all in the sauna together.
Moving forward, I’ll always value the culture of curiosity in the office and the desire for everyone to get the best out of each other. Your move Ogilvy&Mather.
